I received my medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California and completed 4 years of residency in Psychiatry at Kansas University Medical Center. This was followed by a 2 year fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
My main area of focus, and passion, is providing psychiatric care for families. I also have a special interest in treating the LGBT population. My practice, Wexler Family Psychiatry is a proud sponsor of KCPRIDE17.
The definition of a family is not limited to the traditional nuclear family, but also includes families headed by poly amorous couples, single parents, step parents, gay and lesbian parents, as well as families headed by foster parents and grandparents. A child is best treated if the entire family unit is supported and embraced. Many psychiatric disorders, such as bipolar mood disorder, anxiety, depression and ADHD have a genetic basis, so children are best served if their parents are also evaluated for psychiatric disorders.
Services I provide include medication management for both children and adults facing the following challenges: ADHD, depression, anxiety, bipolar mood disorder, addiction. I also provide counseling about sexuality, addiction, body image, parenting skills, and managing crisis.
In addition to providing clinical services, I am an active advocate for people facing mental health challenges. I am available for educational speaking engagements about the following issues: Coping With the Difficult Patient, Transgenderism, Teenage Suicide, among others.
